Multipoint means your headphones or earbuds stay actively connected to two devices at the same time, for example your phone and your laptop, so you can move between them without reconnecting. It is not the same as a headset that remembers several devices but talks to only one at a time, and it is not the same as automatic switching inside one brand's ecosystem. Knowing which one a product has saves a lot of frustration.
Three features that get confused
| Feature | Active connections | How you switch | Works with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-device pairing (pairing memory) | One at a time | Disconnect on one device, connect from the other | Any Bluetooth device |
| Multipoint | Two at once; Bose notes that some Bluetooth devices support three | Pause on one device, press play on the other; calls take priority | Any Bluetooth devices, if the headset supports it |
| Account-based automatic switching | One at a time, moved for you | Follows what you are doing | Only the same brand's devices on the same account |
Many spec sheets say how many devices a headset can remember. That number says nothing about multipoint. Look for the words multipoint, dual connection or "connect to 2 devices simultaneously".
