Before features, screens or price, the first question is whether the watch will work with your phone, and how well. Some watches will not pair with the "wrong" phone at all. Others pair with both iPhone and Android but quietly lose features on one of them. And a few extras only work with a phone from the same brand, or only in certain countries. Here is how to tell before you buy.
Three kinds of compatibility
- Locked to one platform. Apple Watch needs an iPhone; Google's Pixel Watch and Samsung's current Wear OS Galaxy Watches need Android.
- Cross-platform through the maker's own app. Huawei (Huawei Health), Xiaomi and Redmi (Mi Fitness) and Garmin (Garmin Connect) use their own companion apps. Many of their watches pair with both iPhone and Android, but some features are Android-only. For other brands, the maker's pages do not always say which phones and features are supported, so check the companion app's listing in your phone's app store and the watch's manual.
- Brand-tied extras. Some features need a phone from the same maker, a minimum software version, or a supported country.
Who pairs with what (as of November 2026)
| Watch family | iPhone | Android | What the maker says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Required | Not an option | Apple: you need to pair it with your iPhone; current models need iPhone 11 or later on a recent iOS |
| Google Pixel Watch | Not supported | Required | The minimum Android version rises with each model, for example Android 12 for Pixel Watch 5 |
