Counterfeit earbuds, cables and chargers are everywhere, and the good fakes are convincing at first glance. The aim of this guide is not to make you paranoid but to give you a short, repeatable routine for checking anything you buy, from any shop. No single sign proves a fake; several together usually do.
Start with the price and the seller
If a price is far below what the same item costs everywhere else, treat that as the first warning rather than a lucky find. Prefer sellers who issue a proper receipt with the item name and date, state a return policy, and can tell you where the warranty is honoured. A seller who refuses to open the box in front of you or to let you test the item is telling you something.
Packaging
Original packaging is usually tight, square-cornered and printed sharply with consistent colours. Look for:
- Spelling and grammar errors, blurred logos, or colours that look slightly off compared with the brand's own site.
- Thin, flimsy cardboard, or an inner tray that does not hold the product firmly.
- Seals and shrink-wrap that look re-applied or uneven.
- A barcode or model number on the box that does not match the one printed on the product itself.
- Missing regulatory marks or safety text that the brand normally prints.
Fake boxes have improved a lot, so packaging alone is not enough; it is the first filter.
Serial numbers and brand registration
Most brands print a serial number on the product and on the box. Many offer a page in their app or on their website where you can enter it to check warranty status or register the device. Do this before the return window closes. A serial that is invalid, already registered to someone else, or that shows a different model from the one in your hand is a strong signal. For wireless earbuds and watches, the pairing screen on your phone often shows the model name and firmware version; a mismatch there is hard to fake.
Build details
Hold the product next to photos from the brand's own site and look closely:
- Edges, seams and buttons: originals have even gaps and clean moulding; fakes often show rough edges, mould lines or wobbly buttons.
- Weight: counterfeits are frequently lighter because they use cheaper magnets, smaller batteries and thinner shells.
- Connectors: original USB-C and Lightning plugs are precisely finished, fit snugly and do not wiggle.
- Text and logos: originals are crisply printed or engraved, with the correct font and spacing.
- Cable feel: original cables have consistent thickness and strain relief at both ends.
Performance signs
- Chargers that take much longer than the rated speed with a good cable, or that get very hot.
- Earbuds whose noise cancelling does almost nothing, whose battery falls far short of the spec, or whose app features are missing.
- Firmware update failures, or an app that does not recognise the device.
- Watches with features missing from the menu, poor touch response, or sensors that give flat, unchanging readings.
Warranty and receipt
A genuine product comes with a warranty from the brand or its authorised distributor. Keep the receipt and the box; both are usually required for a claim. If the seller offers only a "shop warranty" and avoids questions about the brand's own coverage, be cautious.
Why fake chargers and cables are a safety risk
A counterfeit earbud is a disappointment. A counterfeit charger is a hazard. Teardowns of fake chargers have repeatedly found missing insulation between the mains side and the USB side, undersized components, and no proper over-current or over-temperature protection. That can mean a shock through the phone's metal body, a damaged battery, or a fire while you sleep. Cheap uncertified cables can overheat at the connector. Spend properly on the parts that plug into the wall, even if you save elsewhere.
A five-minute routine
- Compare the price with the brand's own listing.
- Inspect the box for printing quality, seals and matching numbers.
- Check the serial with the brand before the return window ends.
- Compare weight, finish and connectors with official photos.
- Test the headline features: fast-charging speed, noise cancelling, app pairing.
- Keep the receipt and register the warranty.
